Commission for Dept of Conservation ( DOC) NZ

🍃 Commission for Dept of Conservation ( DOC) Thames. 🐌

100cm x 80cm~ Acrylic ink & acrylic

🐋 While the original painting will hang in the Thames / Coromandel Peninsula Doc office, the image of it will be used as a peep board / hole in the head board for promotion & events to raise awareness of our native forest but predominantly the Kauri tree & the effects of kauri dieback disease on this mighty tree.

The brief was to include Kauri, Tohora ( whale) , Ruru (owl) , Kereru ( wood pigeon) , giant weta & giant snail.
The words read:

“Just as kauri entwine with others to protect the health of the forest, we work together to protect our kauri lands for future generations.

He waka eke noa – We are all in this together”

( please feel free to google the relationship and story between the Kauri & Tohora its beautiful )

New Works! – Falcon, Whale Tail, Peacocks.

I barely know where to start…. after having 6 weeks of no creativity thru end of December and January 2016 (kids on summer school holidays here in New Zealand), I have thrown myself back into it with a vengeance and so much stored up creative ideas, its like I cant stop and nor do i want to!

So this year has been about breaking thru some boundaries I was starting to get stuck in with my art last year. I still LOVE my precise detailing and fine lines, but I needed and wanted to do something alot freer and alot faster, so im having day on, day off with commissions (precise detailing taking alot of focus and time) and this new technique i hahve literally thrown myself into. Fast, no thinking, mixed media, ink, stencils, sticks, scrapers, acrylic, enamel spray and anything else i can get my hands on…. layers and layers of detail, to then use it for inspo to pick out something, in this case peacocks. 🙂
This first one is in progress, still have some to do, but its pretty much there,… totally LOVED these, they satisfied the aspect of me that is messy, uncontrolled, i even used my left hand (I am right handed) for some of it to make sure it was naive and not contrived in anyway.

Silver Fern & Tui

New Zealand has many native flora and fauna.
We are blessed with some of the most stunning native bush in the world.
We live between native bush and the sea, so I get to go bush walking when ever I want to.
I could load up 100 pics 🙂 of my walks if i wanted to, but i wont , (collective sigh of relief lol)…
here are 3 to show you where i get my inspiration from………

and, right outside my bedroom window in spring, are gorgous wee chaps like this Tui bird,
(another native of New Zealand),
talking away, clicking and singing with what sounds alot like a bell bird at times.
The stunning ‘metallic’ colours on this bird are mesmerising to me, these pics dont really show the deep gun metal grey, emerald greens and deep turquoises…the subtle nuances of them are what fascinate me, not a blaring vibrant “look at me” type thing, but more, an elegance, (esp with that ‘cloak’ of feathers around its nape), and a slight arrogance in a way. They are quite naturally tame, you can get within a metre or so when they are feeding and they dont mind at all.

Firefly, Feline, Butterfly & Bird

I was commissioned to do 2 paintings, one of something with a firefly in it, and one with a feline theme.

Below are the finished pieces, owner is very happy 🙂

This Butterfly was something light and fun I did as a ‘fill in’ with all my Xmas commissions. I find I need a break from the commissions all the time, so I stay fresh and inspired. butterfly final

This is a cropped piece of a Tui bird tail (Native bird of New Zealand), I have painted 3 of these birds now and I always start with the tail and complete that first, then I build the rest of the painting around it. I will post the whole three complete soon.

Peacock Feathers, Tribal decoration & Birds

My lovely partner is a house painter, and came home with what was leftover of  the most beautiful fuchsia coloured  paint, called ‘Center Stage’ (<<love it) – so, being acrylic paint, I asked if I could have it, and created this beauty with it.
A carry on from my peacock phase , and I added some of my Reina style tribal/cultural designs to it, and I must say Im rather pleased with what the outcome was 🙂

that then led to this:

Needing a change of direction 😉 I then decided to try my hand at some ‘birds’. I use the word ‘bird’ loosely.. I loathe giving anyone an expectation, cos I like my ‘creatures’ to be anything really,.. lets just call them ‘flying creatures’ – they do look a little mystical/mythological…. so these 3 were produced in (again) rather quick succession, and I really loved them. The top one is finished, and the bottom 2 are still in progress, but not too far off being done.

There is a  little piece of me in all my paintings of course, but these were a big piece of me 🙂

Peacock Series

May 8 sig©Reina Cottier Art 2014
(SOLD)

A while ago I decided to give painting my version of a peacock a go, but it took some time before that thought and the actualization of it to happen. Typical me, I have all these great ideas constantly, like a flow of thoughts & feelings, sometimes Ill get 10 at a time then nothing for a week,…or it’ll be a steady flow over a few days. The peacocks have been brewing for a while, like the owl (have i posted a pic of my owl yet?) and the whales and dolphins. So,back to peacocks:  I knew i wasnt going to feature the head or the body, (in that, i wasnt going to worry about making it look real) it was always going to be all about the ‘plumage’ and colours , so the decision was already made to feature the bird form the back, rather than the front…. I ended up doing 3 of them, one commission, and 2 others to sell. Both sold. Unfortunately the lady that bought the 2nd one had to pull out of the sale due to some personal stuff, so that (below) has now become available again.

and this one was the commission:

what fun these were to do! Im definitely going to do more at some point, but of now, have moved onto other bird, well… sort of mythological Reina style birds :)…. Ill post up some pics soon… there’s a sense of freedom/liberation with this next series. 🙂
