Last week we made the trip to Auckland with the final 3 paintings to install.
Here’s a short look at the final painting, on level 3 of the stairwell.
I’ll have a longer, beginning to end vid coming soon.

Install: Painting 1- New Zealand Native Art- ‘Seabed’.
The first painting, of three, (2.4m x 1m) has now been installed on level one of the internal stairwell of the office block.
For those of you tha dont know, I got a contract to paint 6 panels, each 2.4m x 1m for the internal stairwell of a major city office block, the external wall being glass so will be able to be seen from the road. It is all based around native New Zealand (where I live) so the lower level is seabed, the middle is native forest/bush and the upper will be NZ skies. First panel now complete. The next one is a diptych. and the final is a triptych.
Couldn’t be happier .
Painting Paua / Abalone
Cropped piece of large wall mural of NZ Seabed.
This was a real challenge. The perfectionist in me needed this to be exactly right, the feel of it, the colours everything had to be exactly as I sensed it should be and I was settling for nothing less. I painted over it three times completely wiping it out and starting again , before I manage to finally get on a roll that felt on the right track.
Relief! That is the feeling when everything else Floyd so easily with this painting and this is completely stopped me in my tracks. The end result I am thrilled with and it sits perfectly and balance with the rest of the painting.

Whale / Tohora Commission

This is a commission for a friend. Ive painted loads of whales, but decided to change the angle of this, I wanted it to more dramatic. I akso, for the first tine am using acrlic markers for some of the detailing , certainly alot faster than brush & ink.
Really happy how it’s progressing so far 🙂
Kiwiana, Silver Fern & Tui Bird

New Zealand has many native flora and fauna.
We are blessed with some of the most stunning native bush in the world.
We live between native bush and the sea, so I get to go bush walking when ever I want to.
I could load up 100 pics 🙂 of my walks if i wanted to, but i wont , (collective sigh of relief lol)…
here are 3 to show you where i get my inspiration from………
….to then paint things like this:

and, right outside my bedroom window in spring, are gorgous wee chaps like this Tui bird,
(another native of New Zealand),
talking away, clicking and singing with what sounds alot like a bell bird at times.
The stunning ‘metallic’ colours on this bird are mesmerising to me, these pics dont really show the deep gun metal grey, emerald greens and deep turquoises…the subtle nuances of them are what fascinate me, not a blaring vibrant “look at me” type thing, but more, an elegance, (esp with that ‘cloak’ of feathers around its nape), and a slight arrogance in a way. They are quite naturally tame, you can get within a metre or so when they are feeding and they dont mind at all.
so here are 2 of my Tui paintings:

Painted Mannequin Torso

Finally was able to finish one of many mannequin torsos!
very happy with the outcome and sold to a regular buyer in Australia.
Much more difficult to paint fine smooth lines on this surface,
so this took alot longer than I normally would to paint something similar on canvas.
I have more to paint, and Im looking forward to experimenting with feathers and other things!

Whales & Dolphins

I succumbed, and finally painted a dolphin. 🙂 ‘Reina Style’ of course 🙂
Here is the result, the hardest part was getting the shape of the dolphin right, I had about 4 goes at it
until I was satisfied it looked right (in perspective). The rest was easy, so much fun, like coloring in when you were a kid!
SImilar thing with the whales below, getting the shape right was the most important thing and what I
focussed on. After that, it just flowed……
I have a 3rd whale on the go, a commission, and perhaps there is another dolphin inside me somewhere…?
as usual, you can contact me at: reinacottier@gmail,com if there are any queries. 🙂
Tis all for now… bye. x
the ‘Legend’ continues….

I have decided to call this series ‘Legend’.
The viewer can make of that what they will, I dont like naming my art, I dont want MY influence to affect what the viewer sees/feels… but for the sake of marketing (lol!) I need to name a series when I am creating them.
So I am now on #5! Yep speedy gonzalas is at it again!

February 2014

hey all, been a while huh… Ive had 9 weeks off painting because we moved house & towns,
we now live by the beach, a beautiful coastal town with the back drop of mountains covered in native bush… so so so happy here……
and then it was summer school holidays for 6 weeks here in New Zealand 🙂 Absolutely no painting gets done with kids around, 🙂
So, the above painting is (finished and sold) one of the first I have done this last week.
Decided to kick of the year with a blast of colour and i have to say I love it.

this one is also finished, (and sold),
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 3 below are all in progress 🙂 so I have been busy, and as usual have about 7 paintings on the go at once
which is the only way I can work.
I have no plans in store for my art this year, other than to keep producing paintings that
make me feel good. Being by the sea is so much better for my soul/creativity.
Butterfly Series
A few months ago I spontaneously painted an abstract-ish butterfly, it was so popular, sold within 5 mins of posting it, and everyone said ‘you HAVE to paint more butterflies!’……
I didnt feel like it at the time, but a few weeks ago, I suddenly had an urge, and in my usual style, have painted about 10 in 3 short weeks. LOL!
Here are a few of the ones I have done so far, more to come, they have all, but one, sold…..
ALL images & artwork is ©Reina Cottier Art 2013
More to come…… 🙂
Against the Grain series cont’d
A Gallery of July/August works
I have so many pics to share, that this post is going to be mainly pics of my art that I have produced through end of July and August.
ALL WORKS © Reina Cottier 2013
I bought some TOTALLY COOL acrylic markers and you can see I have been having some fun with them.
Instead of outlining shapes in a large painting taking me about half and hour, it now takes me about 15- 20 mins max!
Been using my stencils again too, loving it!
🙂
June 11th 2013
This is the busiest time of the year for me, a number of important birthdays, and family celebrations and lots of other activities that need my attention,
hence, not an overly active painting time, but still… I have managed to start some really cool cnavas’s that are making me smile.
here’s 2 I started, the red & purple on the left and the turquoise, orb & koru on the top right- both with LOADS of texture…
The bottom right is a revamp, a re visit of an older one that never ever quite sat ‘right’ with me. So I am totally changing it, and its feeling much better, even though I still have a long way to go.
all in progress……..
thses 2 are finished and sold:
this one is part of the ongoing ‘Shades of White’ series, I decided to depart from the ‘marbly’ type backgrounds and go for something smoother….
Shades of White
well this series happened quite by ‘accident’ ….
I painted the background of #1 and then doodled a very fast design straight onto the canvas and painted the outline of it white, as I always do as a prep for the rest to come… the COLOUR, the signature ‘Reina colour’ 🙂 ……
I posted an ‘In Progress’ pic on my FB page and got an overwhelming response of: “its FAB as it is!!” … so, a new series was born…
this is the finished result of the first one:
#1 (18″ x 36″-for sale)
(c) Reina Cottier Art 2013
#2 (20″ x 24″ Sold)
and this one i started yesterday, still in progress: (SOLD)
I feel like I have another few of these left inside me yet 🙂
Cascading Dreams
hi all 🙂
Here is a new series I literally exploded with this last couple of weeks….
it all started with this love affair i have with orbs and/or bubbles and/or planets.
Of course, what evolved was way more than that, my signature ‘swirl’ or koru, made its obligatory appearance and my use of colour was completely in the moment… as is everything i do….
the background of the painting involves lots of water spraying and layering, then I add the design on the top, with colour and shading.
levaing you with a collage I have done of things that inspire my creativity,
I often get asked what inspires me with regards to my art :)How to answer that with words, when it really is visual and sensory to me. Its not only colour, shape and textures, but also experiences, emotions & thoughts…..So here is a collage of about .001% of things that inspire me, that stimulate my senses, so I then use my language of shape and colour to express that inner experience. ♥
Happy New Year to all!
All the very best to everyone for 2013!
