Lack of passion is fatal

I have been putting some well known quotes on my art (couldnt find the author of this one).

Many things are happening in my neck of the woods, … but its late and no time to write more just now,

so back tomorrow to add some more……

till then….

ciao.

March was huge…..

HI everyone!

March was so busy for me! omg, conpleted 2 commissions, and sold 3 other paintings,as well as organising other art paraphernalia to go overseas.

Somewhere inbetween i managed to start 2 more paintings this being one of them:

felt the need, with such a short summer, to have some greens and yellows, then of course, I have to have the contrast, so threw in the purple and blue….really liking it so far, ..it pulls me in, I feel light when I look at it, so i really want to be careful not to make it too ‘heavy’ both visually and energetically, I want to keep the ‘uplift’ factor going.

And I loved my Heart Soul Whole (see previous blog entry) so much, I started  a version of it for myself, not triptych, no words….

(c) Reina Cottier 2012

obviously not complete, and its big, which i like, big bold piece will be perfect in my entrance way.

Sold this one:

a fun thing i did in a very short space of time…didnt feel the need to add to it, even though i knew it was quite basic and simple, i liked that. 🙂

and sold this one finally, a fave of mine, went to Australia….

(c) Reina Cottier 2012

Off to Oz on Thursday with commission #2, all but complete, looks fantastic, will post a pic when complete.Staying for 4 nights, really looking forward to it, some shopping in Sydney, seeing some friends, and family. Cant wait. 🙂

Complete and progress…. 2 Triptych’s….

this one is finished, being shipped tomorrow:
(c) Reina Cottier Art 2012

I am thrilled with this, it is exactly how i wanted it to look/feel. In fact, i am so happy with it, I have started a similar one for myself to keep. 🙂 … on one huge canvas and no words, slightly different layout. The ‘client’ (who is now a beautiful friend) is really ecstatic, I sent her a pic of the finished piece, so that is extremely gratifying. Good to know we were on the same wavelength.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My 2nd commission this month has started, also a triptych, also three words, one on each panel , this one is for an office boardroom, … here’s my progress so far, only about 30% done so far:
as usual my pic does the colours no justice… way more vibrant and intense….. the three words art going in the black spaces- in keeping with the company colours/brochure of gold writing on black background,, i will copy the same font as the brochure as well. …. its flowing along well, no hiccups, all good.
I had submitted a some images to be considered for this a while ago, and it was really awesome to hear back with positive news.I am not one to submit my stuff left, right and center, or ‘spread myself to thin’, I feel like I could go to town all over the internet, uploading my images everywhere, but then there is upkeep and ongoing marketing and it all gets very very time consuming. Having said that, I do dedicate a small portion of my day to this happily, and it has certainly paid off with a number of sales of original, prints, cards, several big commissions and ongoing commissions from regular clients. (Facebook is the BEST, soo many sales thru that alone, but the best thing is meeting such fantastic people and building a relationship with them, both clients and other artists too) Without the internet NONE of this would have happened. I am in New Zealand, literally at the bottom of the world with a population of around 4 million… its not a place you can make alot of $ in the art world.  I am also a busy mother of 2 full on girls and a hairdresser (I work from home), so there is not enough hours in the day for me to be painting 8 hours a days, 5 days a week to produce enough work to sustain an ‘originals only’ selling lifestyle… let alone pounding the pavement putting my art in cafe’s and such… its just not where Im at really. Striking a balance with all these things in my life has been interesting, and I am also totally blessed to have an amazing partner who supports anything I do or dream 1000%.
So! while my kids were away for 10 days with their dad over Xmas, I used the time as productively as I could and finished up a whole pile of stuff as well as doing some ‘practice runs’ for other things…..
first up is this piece:
©Reina Cottier 2012
yes, something different for me! I had been ITCHING to try this style for ages, using a water spray on the canvas first then applying the paint with a sponge and letting it drip and spread with the water around the canvas. This was FUN! I loved doing it, and I will do it again at some point, and or integrate this technique with my other stuff. There was alot of drying time inbetween stages involved, so that was slightly irritating to this ‘I want everything yesterday’ girl, lol! but hey, with a little help from a friend- a fan heater- we got there relatively quickly! (Im not into waiting for hours, its just not part of who i am, if i cant bang out a painting in an hour or 2, forget it! LOL!)
this one is not finished:
Im playing with words directly onto the canvas (like “Evolve-last post) rather than Photoshopping them on as i normally do. Also integrating my BELOVED stencils (can you tell??? hehe) with the word process…. this was very much about the earth below- foliage, forest, land, growth…then the sky, galaxy above,..there is a heart shape up there-unfinshed, you can barely see, but i think it will be cool when its done… i want to maintain the translucent look of it… love that.
this is my practice board!…..
its turned out to be quite a nice piece on its own! 🙂
Its school holidays here for another 2 weeks, we are in summer, so there wont be a whole lot of painitng going on, but as soon as they are back to school, ..Im full steam ahead!
Wishing you all an AMAZING week! be well & happy. Reina.x
Kids painting #2 almost done….
This one for Miss 7, is about 80% there, (Miss 5’s  is done). They get back from a week away tomorrow, and I will have both paintings ready for them…cant wait to see their faces! I think I will be more excited than they will be.
For the kids….
I wanted to, after all this time paint something for my children. (been RATHER slak, painting my heart out for me me me me oh, and …me)…. but nothing for my family oops!
I have two full on vibrant feisty lil Goddess’s, Miss 5 & Miss 7, chalk n cheese, in almost every way except their determination, their strength, their sheer will.
Miss 5, who likes to go by the name “Rainbow’, (after I had asked her “if mum painted you a picture, what sort of things would you like in it?”_…. after a nano seconds hesitation she announced “A rainbow (SHOCK HORROR) and a heart please mum”.
OOOOOKAY, done. Quite happy to spend a day doing something non adult like,  get in touch with the ‘inner kid’ so to speak, felt great!
A day later and Im this far, I feel like its almost done, few little tweaks here in there, but hmmmmmm, yip. 🙂
Next up, is for Miss 7,…there will be WW3 if they are really totally different, because I can guarantee they will both want the same one, I can hear it now, “I want the heart one!” “I like those colours better!” grrrrrr,… so I’m still having a heart and a rainbow, and same colours, lots of twirls & swirls, …….but….
here’s the start of it: obviously a work in progress….
will keep you posted, if its as quick as the last one, shouldn’t take long at all.
Almost there…..
continuing on from the 2nd ‘heart I would never paint’*rolls eyes @ self*, here is the second attempt at something that I would still call abstract, but a tad more commercial.
Surprisingly, Im actually LIKING my heART yet again! *falls over in a shocked heap* Its not finished, but Im almost there, I can feel it, Im also quite happy with my ribbons-never done them before.
Its really quite strangely satisfying to be painting this sort of thing, I really thought it would never ever happen, but Im so pleased I decided to investigate this avenue. 🙂
Have about 6 pieces on the go at the moment, and they are all quite different from each other, the separate entirely different aspects of me are definitely being expressed, no two ways about it.
My moon (featured in previous post) is beckoning me everyday, but i want to be certain about the next step on that one….so just waiting for my moment. Then i will need a clear path, good music & glass of gwertz. 🙂
things that inspire me creatively…
Im not and never have been a painter of fruit bowls, people or landscapes, -anything that ends up happening to look like one of these is PURELY accidental, not design :-)… oh & dont get me wrong, I have FULL respect for those that do and love it, …I dont. My kicks are from experiences, and feelings, the stuff within. All sounds rather deep and ommm i know, but really this is where im at. I remember at school, art, yip, won all the prizes for COPYING stuff, *sigh* this is so not satisfying for me, there is no expression of me when i copy a photo or a ‘thing’ and draw/paint it onto a page/canvas. I want to get soul stuff down, I want to be real (not for ONE minute saying that painting things like fruit aren’t real of course they are, its relative i guess :))about what i am projecting and what ever is then being perceived is up to the viewer. If someone looks at my art and gets a great feeling or connects with it in anyway that stirs something up for them then i am thrilled. I never want to dictate what thsoe things should be, therefore another reason im not going there with a bowl of roses and such.
Having said all that, yes, lately have investigated the ‘heart’ theme, and have been really enjoying it, .. trying to get it on the canvas in a way that is open for individual perception. Heart to me is about feeling, not something tangible in a solid 3D way, something that can be felt in a million ways.  A heart can be sensual, sensitive, vulnerable, and/or it can be empowered, strong and passionate. SOme hearts are closed for the time being, some are totally free. 🙂
If i have an aversion to something i will often ‘try it out’ just to ‘put it to rest’  once and for all. Sometimes it surprises me that i do enjoy it and the result is ok, or more than ok, and i like that. The Gemini I Am needs these challenges.
this man, (below)Jonas Gerard, is amazing,huge inspiration to me,  he paints to music and has the best philosophies. He paints with his hands too, fingers, palms, he FEELS the paint onto the canvas…  I watch him on Youtube and LOVE his freedom.
                                                  Jonas Gerard live painting. 🙂
I swore i would never paint a heart, to cliche for me i said, lol! But, well, ……….hmm, here it is.
not too shabby really, and i really like how plump and sexy it looks but sure, not bad for a first effort, maaayyyyybe i will do another in future creations, but dont quote me on that. Added the koru, or spiral of life rocketing out thru the leaves as a point of interest and something dynamic in the foreground.
Still loving my background colours of blues, greens, turquoises and indigos,.. shape & flow SO important to me, probably THE most important part of my work, getting the flow and movement right for what i am wanting to express.
LOVE this!!! Did the background months ago, and knew it wasn’t complete, but had to wait and feel the right thing to go with it, had no idea what it was going to be till it just happened. The cord flowed around on the canvas board like magic, it was painted and finshed after that, in about an hour.
There is a softness, yes strength i was attempting to convey, I hope i have achieved this. 🙂
Kundalini
When I did the background for this one, I knew I was thinking about the lower chakras, and the corresponding colours (above), intuitively I drew with pencil initially, the flowing cord shape you see, and it was a very simple and quick process, painting it all in took a little longer, but i loved the result, and it made me feel enriched, warm and full of life flow. Also a type of portal opens up with the yellow and the circle around it…. the ‘light’.
I was very reluctant to put this one up for sale, i was definitely emotionally attached to it, but i got over that reasonably quickly LOL! and its definitely for sale now.
Women Who Run with the Wolves….
The Venus of Willendorf.
Painted by Reina Cottier.
A healthy woman is much like a wolf ~ robust, inventive, loyal, fierce.
Yet separation from her wildish nature causes a woman to become
meager, ghostly, anxious about leaping, fearful to create new life.
With the wild nature as ally and teacher,
we see not through two eyes only,
but through the many eyes of intuition.
With intuition we are like the starry night;
we gaze at the world through a thousand eyes.
The archetype of the Wild Woman carries los bultos,
all the bundles for healing and meaning. She carries all the medicines
of stories, words and songs, and the mending tools of dances,
signs and symbols. She is both vehicle and destination.
She is the essence of the female soul.
No matter how many times she is cut back, called unsafe,
dangerous, useless or mad, she rises through the psyche regardless.
Even La Sombre,
the most restrained woman, keeps a secret place
for the wild nature. Even La Cautiva,
the most captured woman,
is waiting for an opportunity to hightail it to freedom.
All women are born gifted. To live close to the instinctual
nature does not mean to become undone. It means to establish one’s
creative territory, find one’s pack, be in one’s body with certainty and pride.
It means to act in one’s behalf, to find what one belongs to.
It means to rise with dignity,
to proceed as a powerful being
who is friendly but never tame.
The Wild Woman is the one who thunders in the face of injustice.
She is the one who keeps a woman going when she thinks she is done for.
The Wild Woman is fluent in the languages of dreams, images, passion and poetry.
No act of love or social justice occurs without her.
She lives in women everywhere;
in the barrios and in the boardroom,
in the prison and on the mountain at the fire,
in the penthouse suite and on the night bus to Brownsville.
She is the mother of El Duende, the goblin wind of creativity.
She leaves footprints behind for us to try on for size
Whether you are possessed of a simple heart or the ambitions
of an Amazon, whether you are trying to make it to the top
or just make it through tomorrow,
whether you be spicy or sombre,
regal or roughshod ~
the wild nature belongs to you.
She truly belongs to all. The issue is simple:
Without us Wild Woman dies.
Without Wild Woman, we die.
Para vida, for true life,
both must live.
