Install: Painting 1- New Zealand Native Art- ‘Seabed’.
The first painting, of three, (2.4m x 1m) has now been installed on level one of the internal stairwell of the office block.
For those of you tha dont know, I got a contract to paint 6 panels, each 2.4m x 1m for the internal stairwell of a major city office block, the external wall being glass so will be able to be seen from the road. It is all based around native New Zealand (where I live) so the lower level is seabed, the middle is native forest/bush and the upper will be NZ skies. First panel now complete. The next one is a diptych. and the final is a triptych.
Couldn’t be happier .
Painting Paua / Abalone
Cropped piece of large wall mural of NZ Seabed.
This was a real challenge. The perfectionist in me needed this to be exactly right, the feel of it, the colours everything had to be exactly as I sensed it should be and I was settling for nothing less. I painted over it three times completely wiping it out and starting again , before I manage to finally get on a roll that felt on the right track.
Relief! That is the feeling when everything else Floyd so easily with this painting and this is completely stopped me in my tracks. The end result I am thrilled with and it sits perfectly and balance with the rest of the painting.

Painted Mannequin Torso

Finally was able to finish one of many mannequin torsos!
very happy with the outcome and sold to a regular buyer in Australia.
Much more difficult to paint fine smooth lines on this surface,
so this took alot longer than I normally would to paint something similar on canvas.
I have more to paint, and Im looking forward to experimenting with feathers and other things!

Peacock Feathers, Tribal decoration & Birds

©Reina Cottier Art 2014
My lovely partner is a house painter, and came home with what was leftover of the most beautiful fuchsia coloured paint, called ‘Center Stage’ (<<love it) – so, being acrylic paint, I asked if I could have it, and created this beauty with it.
A carry on from my peacock phase , and I added some of my Reina style tribal/cultural designs to it, and I must say Im rather pleased with what the outcome was 🙂
that then led to this:
Needing a change of direction 😉 I then decided to try my hand at some ‘birds’. I use the word ‘bird’ loosely.. I loathe giving anyone an expectation, cos I like my ‘creatures’ to be anything really,.. lets just call them ‘flying creatures’ – they do look a little mystical/mythological…. so these 3 were produced in (again) rather quick succession, and I really loved them. The top one is finished, and the bottom 2 are still in progress, but not too far off being done.
There is a little piece of me in all my paintings of course, but these were a big piece of me 🙂

Butterfly Series

A few months ago I spontaneously painted an abstract-ish butterfly, it was so popular, sold within 5 mins of posting it, and everyone said ‘you HAVE to paint more butterflies!’……
I didnt feel like it at the time, but a few weeks ago, I suddenly had an urge, and in my usual style, have painted about 10 in 3 short weeks. LOL!
Here are a few of the ones I have done so far, more to come, they have all, but one, sold…..
ALL images & artwork is ©Reina Cottier Art 2013
More to come…… 🙂
Marching on…

When it is overcast outside and my studio seems a little dull and dark,i have this amazing industrial light that my partner put up for me,
its fantastic, so light and bright and perfect for varnishing, can see any imperfections immediately.

so these three are what I have been working on for the last week or so,
really enjoying the bright clearness of summer that gets into my bones and reflects in my art……..
all in progress :

and last but not least, some more Reina inspirations:
Lack of passion is fatal

Waves of Creativity :)

I just had a FULL week of nothing but painting!!!!!! (ok yes, I slept, I ate,) I felt so inspired, the more I painted the more creative I felt. The only downside was that I couldnt get to sleep at night, so many ideas whizzing around my brain! lol!
I ended up selling 4 painitngs in 5 days and getting a 5th commission 🙂
here’s some of what I was doing….
These 2 (to follow) were inspired by a place I go to in summer called Tairua, in New Zealand… I have had nearly all of my summer holidays there since i was 13.. its a stunning small seaside town on the east coast of NZ, the beach is beautiful and the energy of the beach & sea there just sooths my soul… its a surf beach, so sometimes very big surf, and not great for swimming, but I go and sit on the beach and soak it all in on every level…. (both sold within a day of uploading)….

In all of these I am also heavily influenced by a place called Muriwai, I lived there for nearly 2 years a few years ago. It was a tumultuous time in my life, a time where I needed healing and this house I had there was up on a hill, set into native bush, and looked out onto a NZ west coast beach (Muriwai) and I had view right up to the Kaipara Harbour… one of the best views EVER. Every day I would sit on my deck/balcony and look out at the water and watched the sun set…. omg the most AMAZING sunsets I have every every seen.. i have so many photos of it now, and every one different. The water was rough and wild, a different colour every day, deep turuoise, almost black at times, – so beautiful, yet always so unpredictable, so dangerous, so full of life, unforgiving, all encompassing LOVED IT. ….
so this one is finally finished and also sold on the first day of loading….
