Commissioned Book Cover- Perfecting the Dance (now published!)

Well this is exciting!!
I was commissioned by the amazing Dr Nesha Jenkins-Tate to paint her a cover for her book. Perfecting the Dance.
(Published by Balboa, a subsidary of Hay House.)
A wonderful journey, from her telling me her thoughts and ideas, to me (with her input) coming up with this concept.
It flowed right from the start, most enjoyable and easy. Even the ‘figures’, that I thought i might struggle with, just ethereally placed themselves there and asked for no feet (LOL!!!) im serious…feet were NOT on the agenda.
Nesha knew exactly the colours she wanted, and i got that spot on first time round too. Thank you Nesha for this wonderful opportunity, im totally honoured to have been able to do this for you. 🙂 All the very best, its a fantastic book!

Book Cover

Excerpt from the back cover:

Perfecting the Dance offers the intimate counsel and refreshingly candid voice of a good friend as it shares practical and inspirational life-lessons.Gain new insights about yourself and your relationships while exploring various topics, such as people-pleasing, parenting, friendships, partnering, love-lessons, forgiveness, and how to discover and pursue your life’s purpose.But this isn’t a book about perfection—it is a book about perfecting. It is about constantly discovering something new about yourself while uncovering new ways to approach life’s twists and turns.And it isn’t a book about perfecting the dancer. It is a book about perfecting the metaphoric dance— navigating your way through life’s changes and challenges and learning how to transcend them through greater love, faith, and courage.Be enriched by these lessons about life and love that are essentially dance-lessons—powerful, practical reminders about how we can keep on dancing with life as it comes our way.

When it is overcast outside and my studio seems a little dull and dark,i have this amazing industrial light that my partner put up for me,

its fantastic,  so light and bright and perfect for varnishing, can see any imperfections immediately.

so these three are what I have been working on for the last week or so,

really enjoying the bright clearness of summer that gets into my bones and reflects in my art……..

Lack of passion is fatal

I have been putting some well known quotes on my art (couldnt find the author of this one).

Many things are happening in my neck of the woods, … but its late and no time to write more just now,

so back tomorrow to add some more……

till then….

ciao.

The Magical Wave series…

have decided to do a series, or a theme of paintings. My last post, ‘Splash of Red’, is part  of the series.  Naturally I have been evolving toward this for quite some time, its fairly obvious that I have bits and bobs of the last 2 years of my art all wrapped into one now.

So the latest one I have just completed is this:

(c) Reina Cottier Art 2012

Again, I am really enjoying this piece. It took a bit of ‘sorting out’ , getting the flow of lines correct, making sure everything had a flow, and yet, I didn’t want everything to have the ‘full stop’, i quite like some movement just disappearing off into nothing ness, and some ‘lines’ just not really going anywhere, but yeh within of that, it needed a balanced, or it looked completely off. At one point I had to keep walking away from it for several hours, and returning for that ‘fresh look’, so I could actually see what was happening on the canvas. I chose these colours because  I wanted a real feel of the ocean (blues, greens, teals,) with dynamic energy & power (reds, purples & yellow). The white is fro drama, and also I like how it reminds me of ocean spray, froth, light through water… really love that. The ocean is in my blood and has been since I was born. I have never been able to love too far from the sea, ONCE when I was 19 I loved inland, not far, only about 10km from the sea (here in NZ that is inland! haha) and I loathed it, I felt claustrophobic, I was always trying to get out to the sea, so I made a resolution to never do that again, and since then I have never lived more than about 200m from the waters edge.
So, Im really feeling this series,

it started with this one:

(c) Reina Cottier Art 2012

then the one in the last blog entry with the red.

what next? not sure… I may even end up calling them the Water, Air, Fire, Earth Wave  series…. *thinks* yep.. its heading that way for sure.

Other things  I am working on:

not finished-almost there

also incomplete,… this one has sold, few tweaks to do,.. its almost there.

SOLD!

Skite time! I thought, since all I have been doing is packaging up paintings to ship away, I would take 5 mins to have a ME moment and share all my sold paintings in the last 2 months!Its been an abundant time in my on all levels, (there is actually one more, that I dont have a pic of, another commission that I took to Australia.)

…and I have another commission to start in the next week or so.

🙂

Busy busy!

How I managed to make it in here today, I do not know! To say I have been busy would be a huge understatement and I’ve been trying to get in here to post something up for about a week now. YES I HAVE AN EXCUSE :)… travel, kids birthday, school holidays. AND I have decided that going away glamping (glamour camping) with the kids is more hassle than its worth, …2 days away = a weeks laundry, clean up, put away all the STUFF. ugh. So here we are one week to the day from being back, and I am still putting away sleeping bags properly and washing out chilly bins. Camping yes, ..with kids NO!

TIME, id love a little more time please.

OK, first up, trip to Sydney to deliver the commission went really well!! SUPERB. I stayed with my aunt and uncle with a spectacular view of sydney harbour, incl the bridge, the city and the Opera House… had a wonderful time.

I havent been able to paint anything since then until yesterday,… I finally was able to do some more on one piece and start another.
here is the one I have started:

I have wanted to do a ‘light’ design on a dark background for ages, but kept distracting myself mid way..so THIS time I was committed to the result.. even though its no where near finished, I am rather pleased with the direction its headed in, I like the slightly misty/night/moonlight/snow? feel it has… sort of ‘Narnia meets Twilight’…

I thnk, if I look back, I took ALOT from this older one below, which developed into the idea for the one above:

and the other one I have added to is this:

this is a cropped piece of the actual painting (see last blog entry), I have added some detail.

I am finding my style is mutating now into something that, instead of swinging around and trying lots of different styles I am (subconsciously) blending all my styles into one. I suppose this is a natural progression, I have to say, it feels really satisfying!

In other news, I have been asked my Artpromotivate.com if they can feature my art. 🙂 So I spent an hour last night filling out the interview… typical me, as I started, I was stumped…what to say??????? how to say it? Then.. the floodgates opened and I couldnt stop! Haha. I told Graham he was more than welcome to edit out anything he wanted, but he seemed ok with it, so thats good!

My Zazzle shop is going well, surprisingly so actually, and its a real pleasure to hear that every single person that has bought something from there, has told me they are really thrilled with the product. So, YAY!!!

I have been asked to Jury 2 art contests lately, and really enjoyed that! What amazing talents some people have, the diversity of creative expression out there never fails to floor me.

My art page on Facebook is probably where i spend most of my time, this is where i get to interact with everyone and thats what I love. I guess its like a daily art blog where I can connect more easily with people.

ok, better go sort out something for dinner, take care, love to all. x

March was huge…..

HI everyone!

March was so busy for me! omg, conpleted 2 commissions, and sold 3 other paintings,as well as organising other art paraphernalia to go overseas.

Somewhere inbetween i managed to start 2 more paintings this being one of them:

felt the need, with such a short summer, to have some greens and yellows, then of course, I have to have the contrast, so threw in the purple and blue….really liking it so far, ..it pulls me in, I feel light when I look at it, so i really want to be careful not to make it too ‘heavy’ both visually and energetically, I want to keep the ‘uplift’ factor going.

And I loved my Heart Soul Whole (see previous blog entry) so much, I started  a version of it for myself, not triptych, no words….

(c) Reina Cottier 2012

obviously not complete, and its big, which i like, big bold piece will be perfect in my entrance way.

Sold this one:

a fun thing i did in a very short space of time…didnt feel the need to add to it, even though i knew it was quite basic and simple, i liked that. 🙂

and sold this one finally, a fave of mine, went to Australia….

(c) Reina Cottier 2012

Off to Oz on Thursday with commission #2, all but complete, looks fantastic, will post a pic when complete.Staying for 4 nights, really looking forward to it, some shopping in Sydney, seeing some friends, and family. Cant wait. 🙂

Complete and progress…. 2 Triptych’s….

this one is finished, being shipped tomorrow:
(c) Reina Cottier Art 2012

I am thrilled with this, it is exactly how i wanted it to look/feel. In fact, i am so happy with it, I have started a similar one for myself to keep. 🙂 … on one huge canvas and no words, slightly different layout. The ‘client’ (who is now a beautiful friend) is really ecstatic, I sent her a pic of the finished piece, so that is extremely gratifying. Good to know we were on the same wavelength.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My 2nd commission this month has started, also a triptych, also three words, one on each panel , this one is for an office boardroom, … here’s my progress so far, only about 30% done so far:
as usual my pic does the colours no justice… way more vibrant and intense….. the three words art going in the black spaces- in keeping with the company colours/brochure of gold writing on black background,, i will copy the same font as the brochure as well. …. its flowing along well, no hiccups, all good.
2012- Reina Cottier Art – Heart, Soul, Whole’, & Cool bags I made………
Made these AWESOME bags in Zazzle with my Hibiscus Dream painting… cant belive how good they look… just loaded them up and sold one within hours! (and a cushion/pillow of the same design 🙂   If you want a peek, go here: http://www.zazzle.com/hibiscus_dream_rickshaw_messenger_bag-210306275512449984
ok, what else?? …..  Im allowed to keep y’all up to date pic-wise with my latest commissioned piece, (it WAS going to be a surprise, but she asked to see a progress shot, curiosity got the better of her 🙂 love it)…. the specs were, a triptych, each panel 10″ x 30″ (so overall size of 30″ x 30″) and the words, heart, soul & whole, were to go on a panel each. Im all but finished it, not quite, …. it was a remarkably easy and quick process, I knew which style of my paintings she liked so the design and colors just came. I wanted to make sure the panels were able to be separted too, so when i was designing it I made sure of that. I LOVE the colours in this one, they make my heart sing… all my faves bundled into one.
its about 70% done here… and today I painted the text on it, and it looks fab, ill post an updated shot when its finished. Something about this piece im really connected with, not ‘to‘, with.  Im not emotionally attached to this at all, its like being a surrogate mother, you always know its going elsewhere, but the birthing process still requires a connection. But in a detached way, it certainly does something for me when i am creating it and viewing it. A really contented smile is all I can think of to describe it. NOT smug, NOT proud, just content, peaceful.
WELL! that was deep huh???!!! LOL!!
what else? oh yes! I made (online) cushions to sell with my Hibiscus dream finished piece! this one:
©Reina Cottier Art Hibiscus Dream
Zazzle now make VERY cool cushions, see top right of my blog page for a pic of it! I think it looks awesome as a cushion…now here’s hoping Zazzle deliver as good as the pic! I have already sold 2, only posted it for sale 3 days ago!
and this is nearly done too…
loads more things happening in the pipeline, but will have to be in another blog entry now, or I’ll be here all night!
take care, talk soon…Reina.x
2011- Reina Cottier Art -Kids painting #2 almost done….
This one for Miss 7, is about 80% there, (Miss 5’s  is done). They get back from a week away tomorrow, and I will have both paintings ready for them…cant wait to see their faces! I think I will be more excited than they will be.
2011- Reina Cottier Art -For the kids….
I wanted to, after all this time paint something for my children. (been RATHER slak, painting my heart out for me me me me oh, and …me)…. but nothing for my family oops!
I have two full on vibrant feisty lil Goddess’s, Miss 5 & Miss 7, chalk n cheese, in almost every way except their determination, their strength, their sheer will.
Miss 5, who likes to go by the name “Rainbow’, (after I had asked her “if mum painted you a picture, what sort of things would you like in it?”_…. after a nano seconds hesitation she announced “A rainbow (SHOCK HORROR) and a heart please mum”.
OOOOOKAY, done. Quite happy to spend a day doing something non adult like,  get in touch with the ‘inner kid’ so to speak, felt great!
A day later and Im this far, I feel like its almost done, few little tweaks here in there, but hmmmmmm, yip. 🙂
© Reina Cottier and Reina Cottier NZ Artist, 2011.
Next up, is for Miss 7,…there will be WW3 if they are really totally different, because I can guarantee they will both want the same one, I can hear it now, “I want the heart one!” “I like those colours better!” grrrrrr,… so I’m still having a heart and a rainbow, and same colours, lots of twirls & swirls, …….but….
here’s the start of it: obviously a work in progress….
will keep you posted, if its as quick as the last one, shouldn’t take long at all.
2011- Reina Cottier Art -work in progress
continuing on from the 2nd ‘heart I would never paint (lol) here is the second attempt at something that I would still call abstract, but a tad more commercial.
Surprisingly, Im actually LIKING my heART yet again! *falls over in a shocked heap* Its not finished, but Im almost there, I can feel it, Im also quite happy with my ribbons-never done them before.
Its really quite strangely satisfying to be painting this sort of thing, I really thought it would never ever happen, but Im so pleased I decided to investigate this avenue. 🙂
Have about 6 pieces on the go at the moment, and they are all quite different from each other, the separate entirely different aspects of me are definitely being expressed, no two ways about it.
My moon (featured in previous post) is beckoning me everyday, but i want to be certain about the next step on that one….so just waiting for my moment. Then i will need a clear path, good music & glass of gwertz. 🙂
2011- Reina Cottier Art ~ ‘Heart’
Acrylic on Canvas– © Reina Cottier and Reina Cottier NZ Artist, 2011.
I swore i would never paint a heart, to cliche for me i said, lol! But, well, ……….hmm, here it is.
not too shabby really, and i really like how plump and sexy it looks but sure, not bad for a first effort, maaayyyyybe i will do another in future creations, but dont quote me on that. Added the koru, or spiral of life rocketing out thru the leaves as a point of interest and something dynamic in the foreground.
Still loving my background colours of blues, greens, turquoises and indigos,.. shape & flow SO important to me, probably THE most important part of my work, getting the flow and movement right for what i am wanting to express.
2011- Reina Cottier Art -Venus sky
Acrylic on Canvas board– © Reina Cottier and Reina Cottier NZ Artist, 2011.
LOVE this!!! Did the background months ago, and knew it wasn’t complete, but had to wait and feel the right thing to go with it, had no idea what it was going to be till it just happened. The cord flowed around on the canvas board like magic, it was painted and finshed after that, in about an hour.
There is a softness, yes strength i was attempting to convey, I hope i have achieved this. 🙂
