The Dreamcatcher- A childrens book by Reina Cottier & Dhyana Muir

PUBLISHED! the creative collaboration by my life long friend Dhyana and myself….

The Dreamcatcher is a book that honours both daydreaming and night dreaming as the voice of our soul and our unique creative force in the world.  Written to ignite and validate dreams, and visions of children, to help develop self esteem and an awareness of the power of imagination.

The Dreamcatcher is a mythical presence in the book overseeing, and interpreting the various dreams of children bringing positive messages and encouragement.
There is also an introduction to meditation techniques built into the storyline which can help sooth those having difficulty sleeping. Our hope is to alleviate the fear of night dreaming and encourage parents and children to discuss daydreams and ideas in a way that supports the next generation of innovators and creative spirits.

in other news, colouring book is going really well,
the regional paper did a feature piece on me and it spurred alot of interest
resulting in many sales of the book, so very happy about that! 🙂

Paper Feature August 2015

Im also helping students at Tairua School do a whale mural for the school pool wall.
We have cut it into ’tiles’ and they will be mounted slightly apart…
progress is going well, with only detailing left to do, here is a part pic of it, not complete.

And last week, I had a stall at the Whitianga Art and Craft Fair… again, very successful, and alot fo fun.
Met some awesome local artists, and sold plenty of prints, colouring books and cards.
I also got 3 commissions out of it, and sold a mini board and 2 paintings…
cant really ask for more than that really, very pleased with the results.

Angelic Series

Been wanting to paint something with an angelic feel for quite sometime, but wasnt sure how to proceed.
A lovely client asked me to paint her some angel wings, and after I had done those, I suddenly felt inspired to paint the three paintings Im posting here.  There is something very serene about the process in painting these, I was inclined to turn the music donw (I normally have it blasting) and didnt cope well with the phone going or anything distracting me for that matter. 🙂

There will be more in this series, but time to take a break from this theme and go to something else,.. I’ll definitely be back to this tho… 🙂

Inspirational Wordart!

WORDART

I created this wordart using my images/paintings, I used words that are in tune with the animal/creature I have paired them with, or the feel of the image/painting I have used.  The result was better than I imagined, and the resulting sales of prints and cards means Ive done something pretty spot on I think 🙂

So, we have 3 butterflies, an elephant, an angel wing, an owl, a peacock, a dolphin & a whale.
I will most likely be adding more to the collection as time goes on.

ALL WORDART AVAILABLE IN PRINTS ON CANVAS, PHOTOCARD & GREETING CARDS.

Finished Works

Moon Goddess

©Reina Cottier Art (now sold)

Finally finished Tribal moon Goddess. Phew.
That is the first face I have painted and, whilst I got the shape ok, the shading was a different story altogther.
Very happy with how she turned out, I didnt want her to look real, but I did want her to have a realness about her essence.

This one also finished. One of my faves actually.
Not sure why, I think its the magical dreamy quality about it, it just feels  good for me to look at 🙂

Currently working on 8 paintings, have completely 2 whales, have a dolphin going, a lotus, and another frangipani painting.
Of course, I love it, and can only operate this way, if I only have one or two paintings on the go, I feel listless and bored & it never feels enough.

ok, must go, talk soon people.

Lotus Paintings

 In Progress:

Been wanting to include a lotus in a painting for a while,

but again, needed to wait until it felt right, and again, not wanting it to look like  a ‘real lotus’,…

so Reina-fied these 2 and managed to start a couple of paintings that I am REALLY enjoying…..

My lovely partner is a house painter, and came home with what was leftover of  the most beautiful fuchsia coloured  paint, called ‘Center Stage’ (<<love it) – so, being acrylic paint, I asked if I could have it, and created this beauty with it.
A carry on from my peacock phase , and I added some of my Reina style tribal/cultural designs to it, and I must say Im rather pleased with what the outcome was 🙂

that then led to this:

July 1 sig©Reina Cottier Art 2014
SOLD

Needing a change of direction 😉 I then decided to try my hand at some ‘birds’. I use the word ‘bird’ loosely.. I loathe giving anyone an expectation, cos I like my ‘creatures’ to be anything really,.. lets just call them ‘flying creatures’ – they do look a little mystical/mythological…. so these 3 were produced in (again) rather quick succession, and I really loved them. The top one is finished, and the bottom 2 are still in progress, but not too far off being done.

There is a  little piece of me in all my paintings of course, but these were a big piece of me 🙂

Tropical Influence

At the beginning of May I spent 9 days in Fiji. I had been there before, once as a child, and again when I was 7 months pregnant (NOT recommended with the heat- blah), but this time was different.

I went with my kids (I have 2 girls aged 8 and 10) and a friend who is a  solo mum, and her son. I can honestly say I have never had a holiday quite like it,… it was a combined thing, the visuals, the experiences, the people, the …. energy.

I shed a few tears going to the airport to come home, the Fijian people are so loving, warm & generous with everything they do & say…it was sad to say goodbye to all our new friends- the staff at the resort. 🙂

Anyway, a few days after we got back we moved house, so it took me a while to catch up with myself and get my groove on creatively….once I had ‘that’ back, I painted these 5 in quick succession. 🙂  the first four all sold fairly quicky, the last one is waiting for its owner to claim it 😉

My first Owl painting

Owl Painting - Reina Cottier Art©Reina Cottier Art 2014

ta dah!! 🙂
this sold within 3 minutes of me posting it online, and sold for the most I have ever charged for a painting of this size.
I put alot of time & energy into this creature, making sure he was exactly as I felt he should be.

All in all, very happy with the outcome 🙂

Peacock Series

May 8 sig©Reina Cottier Art 2014
(SOLD)

A while ago I decided to give painting my version of a peacock a go, but it took some time before that thought and the actualization of it to happen. Typical me, I have all these great ideas constantly, like a flow of thoughts & feelings, sometimes Ill get 10 at a time then nothing for a week,…or it’ll be a steady flow over a few days. The peacocks have been brewing for a while, like the owl (have i posted a pic of my owl yet?) and the whales and dolphins. So,back to peacocks:  I knew i wasnt going to feature the head or the body, (in that, i wasnt going to worry about making it look real) it was always going to be all about the ‘plumage’ and colours , so the decision was already made to feature the bird form the back, rather than the front…. I ended up doing 3 of them, one commission, and 2 others to sell. Both sold. Unfortunately the lady that bought the 2nd one had to pull out of the sale due to some personal stuff, so that (below) has now become available again.

what fun these were to do! Im definitely going to do more at some point, but of now, have moved onto other bird, well… sort of mythological Reina style birds :)…. Ill post up some pics soon… there’s a sense of freedom/liberation with this next series. 🙂

Pop into my FB page if you want to see more…. 🙂

Whales & Dolphins

I succumbed, and finally painted a dolphin. 🙂 ‘Reina Style’ of course 🙂

Here is the result, the hardest part was getting the shape of the dolphin right, I had about 4 goes at it

until I was satisfied it looked right (in perspective).  The rest was easy, so much fun, like coloring in when you were a kid!

SImilar thing with the whales below, getting the shape right was the most important thing and what I

focussed on. After that, it just flowed……

February 2014

Feb 14          ©Reina Cottier Art 2014

hey all, been a while huh… Ive had 9 weeks off painting because we moved house & towns,

we now live by the beach, a beautiful coastal town with the back drop of mountains covered in native bush… so so so happy here……

and then it was summer school holidays for 6 weeks here in New Zealand 🙂 Absolutely no painting gets done with kids around, 🙂

So, the above painting is  (finished and sold) one of the first I have done this last week.

Decided to kick of the year with a blast of colour and i have to say I love it.

Feb 18

The 3 below are all in progress 🙂 so I have been busy, and as usual have about 7 paintings on the go at once

which is the only way I can work.

I have no plans in store for my art this year, other than to keep producing paintings that

make me feel good. Being by the sea is so much better for my soul/creativity.
