A few months ago I spontaneously painted an abstract-ish butterfly, it was so popular, sold within 5 mins of posting it, and everyone said ‘you HAVE to paint more butterflies!’……
I didnt feel like it at the time, but a few weeks ago, I suddenly had an urge, and in my usual style, have painted about 10 in 3 short weeks. LOL!
Here are a few of the ones I have done so far, more to come, they have all, but one, sold…..
ALL images & artwork is ©Reina Cottier Art 2013
More to come…… 🙂

‘Against the Grain’

WIP
Great weekend to all! 🙂
I have so many pics to share, that this post is going to be mainly pics of my art that I have produced through end of July and August.
ALL WORKS © Reina Cottier 2013
I bought some TOTALLY COOL acrylic markers and you can see I have been having some fun with them.
Instead of outlining shapes in a large painting taking me about half and hour, it now takes me about 15- 20 mins max!
Been using my stencils again too, loving it!
🙂
This month has been soooo busy, and we are only 2/3 of the way through.
Well, my shades of white series has morphed into a combo of lots of different styles,
Im revisiting the old, the VERY old, the just last year and the new with technique, style & how I am painting at the moment.
Also, quietly noticing how bored I am becoming with my creations, no sooner have I started a piece, i am over it…..
….Its not that I dislike it, quite the opposite in fact, I love it, but my rate of ideas, and creative output is too fast for my time allowance and physical speed of painting. No sooner have i come up with an idea, its not even born and im onto another, lol, not sure this is a good thing, but im just going with it for now, not giving it too much attention. 😉
So, first up is a series of 10″ x 10″ i did, this is a selection of them
these proved very popular and 3 were sold before they were finished.
I also finished these 2 below, top one has sold:
This one had taken me a while, I started it in early May, unusually taking a long time on it, not sure why, but I am really pleased with how it turned it, and it sold about 15 mins after being posted up online:
I found my balinese stamps whilst looking for something else one day, so had a little play
around with those in the background of these 2 paintings,
I really like the subtle detail they add to the painting, not ‘taking it over’ but just a little interest 🙂
Back soon with some pics of current artworks in the pipeline,
until then, take care,
x

I have been working on this piece below for a while, and Im not sure about it at all, slow progress is foreign to me and I would love to just paint over it, my rule of thumb in general is that if its not flowing fast, forget it, but there is a small niggle,,,, keep going, its going to be ok lol… so I am 🙂
this one is finished and sold… its off to Australia. …
I think Im coming to the end of my Shades of White series, well I mean my obsession with it, there is ALWAYS a few more that sneak out when I least expect it, but I feel another phase morphing its way over me and Ill been keen to see what happens next week in the studio! 🙂
Hope everyone has a great week!
Ciao!
So, continuing with my latest obsession:
my ‘Shades of White’ series #5 above, complete and sold. This one is my favourite!
Totally in my element to be painting these at the moment, loving the backgrounds, they look like a mix of galaxy and marble to me. I create them with a combo of water spraying, sponging and big/wide paint brush on its side, I layer this up, and sometimes let dry inbetween layers, but because Ms Gemini here needs INSTANT results, we are not too fond of ‘waiting for things to dry’, no, noooooo waiting for me…. of course, IF I do have to wait, I have another 6 paintings to continue on with on my never ending conveyor belt of creations. 🙂
………also completed and sold #4 below:

ON A ROLL!!!!
*but quietly wonders when it will end?- who cares!*
back with completed updates soon.
Have a good weekend everyone.

well this series happened quite by ‘accident’ ….
I painted the background of #1 and then doodled a very fast design straight onto the canvas and painted the outline of it white, as I always do as a prep for the rest to come… the COLOUR, the signature ‘Reina colour’ 🙂 ……
I posted an ‘In Progress’ pic on my FB page and got an overwhelming response of: “its FAB as it is!!” … so, a new series was born…
this is the finished result of the first one:
#1 (18″ x 36″-for sale)

#2 (20″ x 24″ Sold)
and this one i started yesterday, still in progress: (SOLD)
I feel like I have another few of these left inside me yet 🙂

oh and in other news, my art is one of 52 artists featured in the wonderful e-book:
52 Prescriptions for Happiness- by Joe Dunn & Mali Apple.

This was a very quick doodle i sketched straight onto the canvas in about 3 mins
I was so excited about it I painted it immediately and the whole thing was done and dusted in about 2 hours.
Totally inspired by this ‘new’ thing i was doing, I decided to do something similar on a dark background:

As usual i have several paintings on the go at once, so while I was belting out the above, I was also working on these 2 which i completed:

It seems as though i am returning to my beginnings as far as my paintings go.
These latest ones are very similar to my first few paintings I ever did, and the ones i am working on right now are even more so.
….those will be in my next post 🙂
School holidays right now, so about to go away for a few days with the kids, back to normal next week.
hi all 🙂
Here is a new series I literally exploded with this last couple of weeks….
it all started with this love affair i have with orbs and/or bubbles and/or planets.
Of course, what evolved was way more than that, my signature ‘swirl’ or koru, made its obligatory appearance and my use of colour was completely in the moment… as is everything i do….
the background of the painting involves lots of water spraying and layering, then I add the design on the top, with colour and shading.

Sooo enjoying this series… and its not over yet, I feel like I have another few at least inside of me 🙂

When it is overcast outside and my studio seems a little dull and dark,i have this amazing industrial light that my partner put up for me,
its fantastic, so light and bright and perfect for varnishing, can see any imperfections immediately.

so these three are what I have been working on for the last week or so,
really enjoying the bright clearness of summer that gets into my bones and reflects in my art……..

I also continued on with my’ TRIBAL’ series, which I LOVE doing…
as always there is very little planning with any of my paintings, they are all just go with the flow, most of the time I have no idea what the final result will look like and I just play it out as it evolves.
IF i try to plan something it never flows & I often end up leaving it for months before it is finished.
I am currently working on a mix of both, tribal and sun/surf, and its really exciting for me,..
seeing all my styles coming together like a story intertwining.
*******
I got asked to do a commission by a lovely family with an autistic son 🙂 I was honored to be able to do this and so enjoyed the whole process. She asked me to do a butterfly (Reina style) with the autism ribbon as the body. She sent me a couple of photos of the type of styles she like. I knew this painting was going to flow, because as soon as I went to sketch it, it literally flew out of the pencil onto the paper, the first drawing was the one I went with, and then immediately started on the canvas with paint. I want a warm toned nuetral-ish background, so it wouldn’t ‘fight’ with the butterfly and ribbon which I knew would be extremely colorful and bold. So I chose a soft mustard, caramel colour and made it lighter at the top going deeper at the bottom, this so, again, the intensity of the darker butterfly wings would not get lost in the background. Below is a series of shots from go to woe… the client and I are both thrilled with the result, the pics actually do it no justice but I just cant capture the colours true to tone on my camera, the blue is really blue, turquoise is very turquoise, etc.
FINAL PAINTING
Ta daa! 🙂
Final varnish and posting on Tuesday 🙂
Kids gone for a week with their Dad, so I am in the studio for 7 days…. BLISS…
back with more later…
